Overcoming illness

"You never know how strong you are, until being strong is the only choice you have."

In 2005 I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitus, then 6 months later appeared on the December 2005 cover of ‘Healthy For Men’, just one month later in January 2006 I was submitted to hospital for an emergency illeostomy operation due to a severe blockage of his large intestine.

Over the next 2 years I went through 4 serious abdominal operations , using a colostomy bag then culminating in having the whole of his large intestine removed and an internal pouch constructed in place of my colon, all this whilst still training in the gym and working as a full time model. My case was even written up in a medical journal because there had at the time been very few cases of Ulcerative Colitis causing the damage the way it did.

After a long hard journey, I lost 12kg and all of my hard earned muscle mass, which I had to rebuild after each of the operations . Needless to say that this gave me a massive understanding of how the digestive system works and the kind of dedication needed to persevere through hard times and to know that you will get better and come out the other side mentally and physically stronger from the experience.

This journey instilled in me a resilience to anything that life has to throw my way. Two years after I finally followed my dream and qualified as a Personal Trainer in 2009.

I then decided to challenge myself and my body to compete as a Fitness Model in FAME UK natural body building events in 2009,2010 and 2011, coming 3rd place in 2009 and 2011.

In 2012 I was part of the Winners 2000 team in Devon who won ‘National Gym of the Year 2012’ at the National Fitness Awards.

I then competed at WBFF Denmark and WBFF London in 2013 in the Fitness Model category and at the end of 2013 I was awarded ‘Gym Based Personal Trainer of the Year 2013’ at the National Fitness Awards.

These kind of life experience either make or break you and I know it is one of the reasons why I continue to push my own development as a trainer and a well rounded human being. This shows through in how I train my clients, with education, empowerment, intensity, focus and full support at the core of what I do.

If you’re feeling you need some inspiration and motivation to get through challenging time and need a coach who has talked the talk and walked the walk, then please get in touch, I’d love to help.
