Are you an aspiring Fitness Model or Bodybuilding Competitor then you may want to read on and contemplate a few things before you start planning the next 3 months of protein consumption.

“Hi my names Adam and I used to be a Proteinaholic….

Before I started on my own Plant Powered journey (September 2014) I was eating rib eye steaks for breakfast on a regular basis and if not steak then any number of meats with a selection of vegetables. I was sucked into the Paleo / Meat and Nuts breakfast movement.

I was a product of the fitness industry and bodybuilding worlds’ obsession with protein or more specifically ‘Animal Protein’, because like most I believed plant protein was inferior.

I was a self confessed ‘Proteinaholic’ sacrificing the quality of the meat that I ate just so I could financially ensure all six of my daily meals contained some form of an animal protein that would support my muscular gains and avoid losing all that hard earned muscle I’d worked hard for in the gym.

Show’s Over!

I started my career as a Personal Trainer in 2009 which was the same year I entered my first fitness modelling/bodybuilding show as a way to prove to myself what I could achieve after everything my body had been through (from surgery in2006-2007). This passion for shows continued up to the end of 2013 and my fifth and final show to date.

shows

Then having suffered a shoulder injury in early 2014 I was forced to re-evaluate the way I had been training, which meant questioning the lifestyle, it’s sustainability, the industry and the way I had been eating.

I suddenly realised that I was a prisoner of my protein habit, incarcerated by my belief system that had been forged over 17 years of working out, reading magazines and books on fitness and bodybuilding, that made me shudder at the thought of missing the opportunity to have animal protein in a meal.”

That excerpt was taken from my 7 week transition program From Meat to Plants and gives you an idea of where I once came from, maybe you’re in the same boat and focusing on your physique without questioning where all that animal protein is coming from and the effect that your food choices are having on the world around you?

Well it doesn’t have to be that way, converting to a plant based diet doesn’t mean you will lose any of your gains or performance but in fact you may even improve your physique, performance and recovery, the fact of the matter is that we just don’t have to eat animal protein any more to put on muscle and maintain it.

I feel healthier than ever after two years on a vegan diet, my body and muscles feel fuller when training, I feel I have to do less to stay in good shape and every time I eat a post workout high protein meal it feels amazing to know that no harm has come to animals and the environment because of my food choices.
